Understand the metric

What is Float Rotation?

Float rotation divides current session volume by the number of shares in the stock’s float. A value of 1 means traded share volume equals the float once; 2 means twice that amount. This ratio gives scale to volume, helping distinguish activity relative to available share supply from a simple count of shares traded.

An illustrative example

Float Rotation in practice

If a stock has a 5 million-share float and current session volume of 10 million shares, its float rotation is 2. A second stock with the same volume and a 50 million-share float has rotation of 0.2. Equal volume therefore produces different turnover ratios.

Make it part of your workflow

A more deliberate stock screen.

Add float rotation beside float and absolute volume in a ChartsWatcher toplist to examine how intensely shares are changing hands relative to supply. Combine that view with news and price movement, then inspect the chart to see when the session’s activity accumulated.

ChartsWatcher lets you combine this filter with other criteria in a toplist and rank the results by the columns you care about. Keep the shortlist beside charts, stock news, and watchlists in your own layout.

A little more detail.

How do I add Float Rotation in ChartsWatcher?

Open or create a toplist and add Float Rotation to its filter configuration. Choose the available options and the bounds that fit your screen. Combine it with other metrics to narrow the results. Filters can also refine which stocks qualify for an alert.

What should I check when interpreting this filter?

A rotation of 1 does not mean every available share or shareholder changed hands. The same shares may be traded repeatedly during the session.
