Understand the metric

What is ATRP?

Average true range percentage expresses ATR relative to the closing price: ATRP = (ATR / close) × 100. ChartsWatcher applies a 14-period ATR and offers 1-minute, 5-minute and daily timeframes. This percentage view makes it easier to compare movement in lower-priced and higher-priced stocks without treating a one-dollar range as equally significant in both.

An illustrative example

ATRP in practice

If daily ATR is $2 and the closing price is $50, ATRP is 4%. A stock with $1 ATR and a $100 close has ATRP of 1%. A screen above 3% would retain the first, even though a simple dollar-range comparison might obscure the difference.

Make it part of your workflow

A more deliberate stock screen.

Build a ChartsWatcher volatility shortlist using ATRP, then add average volume to keep a separate view of participation. Display price alongside the percentage so you can connect relative movement to actual price increments when opening individual charts for further investigation.

ChartsWatcher lets you combine this filter with other criteria in a toplist and rank the results by the columns you care about. Keep the shortlist beside charts, stock news, and watchlists in your own layout.

A little more detail.

How do I add ATRP in ChartsWatcher?

Open or create a toplist and add ATRP to its filter configuration. Choose the available options and the bounds that fit your screen. Combine it with other metrics to narrow the results. Filters can also refine which stocks qualify for an alert.

What should I check when interpreting this filter?

ATRP depends on both ATR and the closing-price denominator. A higher percentage does not specify direction or guarantee that the next candle will have a similar range.
