Understand the metric

What is Average volume?

Average volume measures a stock’s usual daily share activity across the selected historical window. ChartsWatcher offers averages over the last 5, 10 or 20 days. Unlike current daily volume, this measure gives historical context before a session has accumulated a full day of trading. Shorter and longer lookbacks can describe different recent activity profiles.

An illustrative example

Average volume in practice

If five days each traded 1 million shares, the 5-day average is 1 million. If one of those days traded 6 million instead, the average becomes 2 million. The example shows how a single eventful session can change which stocks pass an average-volume threshold.

Make it part of your workflow

A more deliberate stock screen.

Start a ChartsWatcher toplist with an average-volume requirement to define your usual activity universe. Add current volume or same-time relative volume to see which members are attracting attention today, while preserving the distinction between normal participation and the present session.

ChartsWatcher lets you combine this filter with other criteria in a toplist and rank the results by the columns you care about. Keep the shortlist beside charts, stock news, and watchlists in your own layout.

A little more detail.

How do I add Average volume in ChartsWatcher?

Open or create a toplist and add Average volume to its filter configuration. Choose the available options and the bounds that fit your screen. Combine it with other metrics to narrow the results. Filters can also refine which stocks qualify for an alert.

What should I check when interpreting this filter?

Historical averages can be lifted by isolated high-volume events. They do not guarantee that similar participation is available at the current moment.
