Understand the metric

What is ATR?

Average true range describes the size of price movement, including gaps from the preceding close. ChartsWatcher uses ATR(14), calculated for the selected 1-minute, 5-minute or daily timeframe. It helps separate stocks with small price fluctuations from those with larger typical movement. Because ATR is an absolute measure, the stock price matters when comparing two symbols.

An illustrative example

ATR in practice

Consider two stocks with daily ATR values of $0.40 and $2.00. A daily ATR screen above $1.00 would keep the second stock and exclude the first. Selecting the 5-minute option changes the measurement to 5-minute candles; it does not represent the same daily volatility requirement.

Make it part of your workflow

A more deliberate stock screen.

Use the ATR filter to define the amount of typical movement you want to research in a ChartsWatcher toplist. Add a price range and an absolute-volume condition, then open the resulting symbols in charts to see whether recent candles resemble their usual range.

ChartsWatcher lets you combine this filter with other criteria in a toplist and rank the results by the columns you care about. Keep the shortlist beside charts, stock news, and watchlists in your own layout.

A little more detail.

How do I add ATR in ChartsWatcher?

Open or create a toplist and add ATR to its filter configuration. Choose the available options and the bounds that fit your screen. Combine it with other metrics to narrow the results. Filters can also refine which stocks qualify for an alert.

What should I check when interpreting this filter?

ATR measures movement size, not direction. A high reading can reflect declining prices or gaps, and the same absolute ATR has different significance at different stock prices.
