Understand the metric

What is Range ($)?

Range measures the absolute distance between the lowest and highest prices over the chosen period. ChartsWatcher supports intraday intervals such as 2, 5 and 30 minutes, plus today, 5 days and 10 days. It describes how wide a span prices covered in dollars, rather than whether the stock finished above or below its starting price.

An illustrative example

Range ($) in practice

If a stock’s 5-minute low is $48.50 and its high is $50.00, the range is $1.50. It has that same range whether the current price is $48.60 or $49.90. A position-in-range filter can distinguish those current locations within the span.

Make it part of your workflow

A more deliberate stock screen.

Use dollar range in ChartsWatcher to identify the absolute price span you want to review. Add a stock-price band for a more comparable universe, then include position in range and volume so the chart review has context about both current location and participation.

ChartsWatcher lets you combine this filter with other criteria in a toplist and rank the results by the columns you care about. Keep the shortlist beside charts, stock news, and watchlists in your own layout.

A little more detail.

How do I add Range ($) in ChartsWatcher?

Open or create a toplist and add Range ($) to its filter configuration. Choose the available options and the bounds that fit your screen. Combine it with other metrics to narrow the results. Filters can also refine which stocks qualify for an alert.

What should I check when interpreting this filter?

An identical dollar range is proportionally larger for a lower-priced stock. The reading also includes extremes that may have been reached only briefly.
