Understand the metric

What is Relative range (%)?

Relative range compares today’s high-to-low range with the stock’s daily ATR(14), expressed as a percentage. The filter puts the current session’s movement span in the context of historical daily movement. A value of 100% means today’s range equals that ATR reference; it is different from a raw percentage range based on the stock price.

An illustrative example

Relative range (%) in practice

If daily ATR(14) is $10 and today’s range is $8, relative range is 80%. A range of $20 produces 200%. A minimum of 200% therefore focuses on stocks whose current daily span is at least twice their daily ATR reference in this illustration.

Make it part of your workflow

A more deliberate stock screen.

Add relative range to a ChartsWatcher toplist to compare wide sessions across stocks with different normal movement profiles. Pair it with position in today’s range and same-time relative volume, then inspect the chart to see where the current price sits within the expanded session.

ChartsWatcher lets you combine this filter with other criteria in a toplist and rank the results by the columns you care about. Keep the shortlist beside charts, stock news, and watchlists in your own layout.

A little more detail.

How do I add Relative range (%) in ChartsWatcher?

Open or create a toplist and add Relative range (%) to its filter configuration. Choose the available options and the bounds that fit your screen. Combine it with other metrics to narrow the results. Filters can also refine which stocks qualify for an alert.

What should I check when interpreting this filter?

Today’s range can expand as the session progresses. A high relative range does not identify direction or mean that price will continue extending the range.
