What is Short interest (%)?
The short-interest filter describes shares sold short relative to the stock’s float. The documented relationship is shares shorted divided by float, with the feature presented as Short interest (%). It supplies a share-supply comparison, unlike short ratio, which compares shorted shares with average trading volume. Neither field identifies what short sellers are doing at the present moment.
An illustrative example
Short interest (%) in practice
If 2 million shares are shorted and the float is 10 million, shorted shares represent one fifth of the float. A second stock with the same shorted-share count and a 40 million float has a smaller relative short interest. The denominator makes the difference.
