Opening range breakout workflow

Build an opening range breakout scanner.

Use the opening range breakout alert to surface a move above the first regular-session candle on your selected timeframe. Then put the alert beside the context you use to review it.

A practical starting point

Build it in three passes.

Set the documented condition, decide which eligible stocks matter to you, then read the event with context.

  1. 01 · Define the event

Add the opening range breakout alert.

Create an alert configuration and select Opening range breakout. Choose the timeframe that matches the opening range you want to observe. The documented alert has a 75,000-share volume threshold and is calculated during the regular market session.

  2. 02 · Narrow the universe

Use filters to describe the stocks you want to review.

Add only the conditions that belong to your own process. Gap from close, current price, absolute volume, and relative volume are separate filters you can combine with an alert. They describe different things, so review their definitions before choosing a bound.

  3. 03 · Review the break

Read the event with its chart and news.

A break over the range identifies an event, not a trade decision. Open the matching symbol on a chart, compare the move with the range and surrounding volume, and check any relevant news before deciding what it means for your plan.

Keep context close

What to check before you interpret an alert.

The alert is a way to surface a documented condition. It does not score the quality of a trade or predict the next move.

  • The selected opening-range timeframe and the first candle that defines it.
  • Whether the matching volume and price context fit the rules you set.
  • The chart and news context around the alert, including moves back inside the range.

Configuration questions

Before you build.

Which opening-range timeframes are supported?

The documented choices are 1, 2, 5, 15, 30, and 60 minutes. The range is the first candle for the timeframe you select after the regular market opens.

Can I use filters with the alert?

Yes. ChartsWatcher documents filters such as price, gap from close, absolute volume, and relative volume separately. Use them to define the stocks eligible for your own alert configuration.

Can I start with the free plan?

Yes. The Free plan includes up to five alert configurations and five toplist configurations. See pricing for the current limits and plan features.
