Short-Term Volume Spike Alerts: Two-Candle Average
Track sudden volume changes against the previous two candles. ChartsWatcher’s Volume Spike (2) alert offers a configurable ratio and intraday timeframe choices.
Understand the trigger
What is Volume spike (2)?
Volume Spike (2) compares the current candle’s traded volume with the average of the last two candles on the same interval. The ratio can use values such as one, one and a half, two, or two and a half; two means at least twice that average. Because the baseline contains only two candles, it describes a particularly recent volume change. ChartsWatcher supports one-, two-, five-, and fifteen-minute intervals.
An illustrative example
Volume spike (2) in practice
Suppose the preceding two one-minute candles traded 2,000 and 4,000 shares. Their average is 3,000 shares, so a ratio setting of two corresponds to at least 6,000 shares in the current one-minute candle. The calculation differs from comparing that candle with ten prior candles or with a daily average.
Make it part of your workflow
Catch the event. Keep the context.
Use ChartsWatcher to notice abrupt volume increases relative to the immediately preceding activity. Open the chart to inspect the two baseline candles as well as the current one, and compare any concurrent price movement or news. The ten-candle variant offers a useful neighboring view when you want a less narrowly recent comparison window.
ChartsWatcher brings your chosen alert types and filters into the same alert window. Add the data columns you want to see, then use the connected chart and news tools to explore a matching symbol.

How do I add Volume spike (2) in ChartsWatcher?
Open or create an alert window and choose Volume spike (2) in its configuration. Select the available options that match your setup, then add filters to define which stocks can trigger it. Review matching alerts alongside a chart and the stock’s news.
What should I check before using this alert?
Two unusually quiet or busy candles can strongly influence this short baseline. A high ratio can therefore reflect a low recent average as well as a large current volume.
